Hey guys,

I need some help. I've started reading Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mystery series. I wanted to know if anybody else has read any of her other series. :\ I like this series very much so I was wondering if anybody could help me and clue me in on her other series.

Thanks in advance...X-posted to a bunch of other communities.

Orgasm...? [08 Jul 2008|10:52pm]

So...perplexing question here, sort of.
I was actually looking through the memories for something I saw before- something about repressing orgasm psychologically/subconsciously. But now I can't find it or remember the term.
Besides whatever this clinical term is, any input on this issue?
I've never given it much thought, but I'm beginning to think that I've never actually come to orgasm. I'm not even sure how to figure that out! So, just really curious on opinions here. Anyone else had this doubt? Anyone want to describe what orgasm is to them? This could be fun...

The Handwriting of Type Designers [09 Jul 2008|02:57am]

jamie found this blog post wherein an Australian Web technologist, Cameron Adams, wondered whether the handwriting of his favorite type designers encoded some sort of influence on their designs. So he wrote to them and asked for a sample. The result will make you slow down and appreciate the beauty and the aesthetics of type. Or else it won't.

Sci-Fi Books For Pre-Teens? [09 Jul 2008|01:08am]
newz4nerdz
o2binbuzios writes "I have two pre-teen boys who are avid readers, and I am going through my mental catalog for great sci-fi & fantasy books for them. What are some of the classics (and maybe new additions to the classics) that would be great for them to read? I am asking because some of the 'straight-up' classics I remember actually seem kind of dark & cynical for younger readers. Starship Troopers and some of the other Heinlein are definitely darker and more political than I remember... Foundation Trilogy and psycho-history maybe too dry. Road-trip reading season is upon us — what are the good reads for the kids in the back seat?"

Hello, one and all.
I am, of course, new to this community and I just thought that I should actually introduce myself instead of lurking around in the background. :)

Here are some basic stats:

Name: Alexandra
Age: 22
Favorite authors: Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Oscar Wilde, Boris Akunin, Vladimir Nabokov, Mikhail Bulgakov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Nick Hornby, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Chuck Palahniuk
Favorite genres: historical fiction, novel of manners, gothic

The last two lists can go on and on. I'm an English major, so I've got plenty experience in reading. ;)
I'm also an avid reader of Russian literature, since I'm Russian by birth.
In any case, I am happy to join this wonderful community. I hope to be a good addition. :)

July 9, 2008: David Farragut [09 Jul 2008|12:09am]

David Farragut

David Farragut was the first senior officer of the United States Navy during the American Civil War. He was the first rear admiral, vice admiral, and full admiral of the Navy. He is remembered in popular culture for his possibly apocryphal order at the Battle of Mobile Bay, usually paraphrased: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!" ("torpedo" was the contemporary term for what is now known as a naval mine).

Kodak Unveils 50MP CCD Image Sensor [08 Jul 2008|11:22pm]
newz4nerdz
i4u writes in to let us know that Kodak has announced the world's first 50 million pixel CCD image sensor for professional photography (i.e., for medium-format cameras). Engineering-grade devices of the CCD, the KAF-50100, are currently available. Kodak plans to enter volume production in Q4 2008. "At 50 megapixels, the sensor captures digital images with unprecedented resolution and detail. For instance, with a 50 megapixel camera, in an aerial photo of a field 1.5 miles [about 2.5 km] across, you could detect an object about the size of a small notebook computer (1 foot by 1 foot)." Here's CNet's Crave blog with a few more technical details.

Senate Scrutinizes Privacy Issues of ISP User Tracking [08 Jul 2008|10:30pm]
newz4nerdz
Hugh Pickens writes "As companies collect, use, and disseminate data regarding online users, there is concern that tracking individuals' Internet activity and gathering information from online users violates their expectations of privacy. The Senate Commerce Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday to look at the policy issues, and the hottest topic will be proposed systems by which ISPs can watch users and sell information about their surfing habits to advertising companies. The Center for Democracy and Technology has issued a report suggesting that these systems may violate federal law (PDF). 'Advertising per se is not the evil here,' says Leslie Harris from CDT. 'It's the collection of individuals' information, usually without their knowledge, always without their consent, creation of profiles and the complete inability of people to make choices about that.' On the other side NebuAd, the most active ad-targeting company, says its profiles are interest-based, and not personally identifiable. 'We have designed our entire company to make sure that we stay on the opt-out side of those laws and policies,' says NebuAd CEO Robert Dykes. Charter Communications announced last month that it would suspend a trial of NebuAd due to customer concerns about privacy."

Neurowarfare and the modern Rogue Trooper [08 Jul 2008|11:00pm]
mind_hacks

Wired has picked up on a US military report that warns of the threat posed by neuro-enhanced enemy soldiers, just released by the "Pentagon's most prestigious scientific advisory panel".

The full report is available online as a pdf file, and covers how pharmaceuticals and brain-computer interfaces could be used by enemies of the US to create hordes of sleep-resistant super-intelligent neurosoldiers who can kill at the speed of thought.

Obviously, I paraphrase, but it's interesting that the report is not your usual blue-sky speculation. It actually covers the science in considerable detail.

It also discusses cultural attitudes to cognitive and brain enhancements of various sorts, and how this might affect how and why they might be used.

Non-medical applications of the advances of neuroscience research and medical technology also pose the potential for use by adversaries. In this context, we must consider the possibility that uses that we would consider unacceptable could be developed or applied either by a state-adversary, or by less-easily identified terrorist groups. In the following, we consider first the issues of what types of human performance modification might alter a military balance, and how those issues can be evaluated. We then address two broad areas where there are significant, and highly publicized, advances in human performance modification. These are the areas of brain plasticity (permanently changing the function of an individual’s brain, either by training or by pharmaceuticals), and the area of brain-computer interface (augmenting normal performance via an external device directly linked to the nervous system).

The ambiguous gift of sign names [08 Jul 2008|09:00pm]
mind_hacks

BBC Ouch! magazine has a completely fascinating article on sign names in the deaf community. They are like mandatory formal nicknames decided by a consensus of your peers that reflect something distinctive about you.

The article describes how assigning and accepting one can be a tricky social negotiation with some having to mount campaigns against unwanted sign names.

Sign names are a weird and wonderful thing, where your average hearing names like Matt, Jack or Jane look positively plain.

But before you get too excited about the possibility of throwing your dull, former identity away, let me point something out: you don’t get to choose your sign name. You don’t even get power of veto on it. It is given to you.

It makes sense. If deaf people could choose their name, you'd get loads of guys wandering around calling themselves Stud, Beer Belly or Jackie Chan's Lovechild. Women would probably call themselves Lip Gloss, Model or Soft Hair. I'm generalising, and stereotyping, but you get my point.

When a sign name is given to you, it's special. A bit like losing your deaf virginity. It’s thought up after an intense period of observation, when people have worked out firstly whether they like you enough to give you one (a sign name, that is), and they've taken all your habits and mannerisms into account to find a name that best sums you up.

I have to say, I find watching sign language completely enthralling. It always seems like a wonderful form of cognitive ballet to me.

Obviously, it has its practical uses to, as demonstrated by this video tutorial on how to flirt using sign language.

Online "Public" Spaces Don't Guarantee Rights [08 Jul 2008|09:41pm]
newz4nerdz
mikesd81 recommends an AP piece covering a lot of examples of the ways free speech and other rights don't exist on the private Web. One case featured was that of Dutch photographer Maarten Dors, who had this picture deleted by flickr. Without prior notice, Yahoo deleted the photo on grounds it violated an unwritten ban on depicting children smoking. While Dors eventually got the photo restored, after the second time it was deleted, the case highlights the consequence of having online commons controlled by private corporations. "Rules aren't always clear, enforcement is inconsistent, and users can find content removed or accounts terminated without a hearing. Appeals are solely at the service provider's discretion. Users get caught in the crossfire as hundreds of individual service representatives apply their own interpretations of corporate policies, sometimes imposing personal agendas or misreading guidelines. First Amendment protections generally do not extend to private property in the physical world, allowing a shopping mall to legally kick out a customer wearing a T-shirt with a picture of a smoking child." Reason.com has some more analysis on the issues brought up by the AP story.

US candidates spar over economy

US presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama have laid out rival economic plans as they attempt to woo voters on the campaign trail.

Mr McCain, the Republican contender, said that Democratic rival Barack Obama wanted voters to pay more taxes.

Mr Obama accused Mr McCain of offering a plan that would benefit only big corporations and multi-millionaires.

The comments came as his team said that his convention speech this summer will be given in a 76,000 capacity stadium.

Slow economy

The two candidates are both focusing their campaigns on economic issues this week.

Mr McCain has been in Denver, where he launched his "Jobs for America" plan.

Unveiling his proposals, the Arizona senator accepted that the economy was "slowing", and accused Mr Obama of favouring policies that would be economically harmful.

[Mr McCain's] policies would actually add more than $2 or $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade
Barack Obama

"If you believe you should pay more taxes... Senator Obama is your man," he said

"I will cut them where I can."

Mr McCain called for a cut in estate tax and an increase in the tax deduction Americans with children receive, as well as for an expansion in free trade agreements and a review of government spending.

And he said that Mr Obama's plan to oblige employers to provide healthcare schemes for employees would stifle small businesses and halt job growth.

Mr Obama had planned to outline his economic plan in North Carolina, but after his plane made an unscheduled landing because of a malfunction, he was forced to deliver his remarks in St Louis, Missouri.

He said that Mr McCain's proposals were "very much the same as those we have seen from the Bush Administration", and that his rival's tax-cut plans would "add more than $2 or $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade and weaken our economy even further".

And he pledged to introduce a stimulus package to help Americans struggling with current economic conditions, on top of "a middle-class tax cut that will provide $1,000 of relief to 95% of workers and their families", funded by closing down "corporate loopholes and tax havens".

As Mr Obama prepared to unveil his economic plan, his campaign team revealed that the last night of this summer's Democratic National Convention, when the Illinois senator is set to make his speech accepting the Democratic presidential nomination, will be staged at a 76,000 capacity sports stadium.

The first three days of the Convention will be held as planned at a Denver convention centre, but the finale will be moved to the Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium, home to the Denver Broncos American Football team.
